What is "Remote Data Collection"?
Here at Exact Alliance, we see a future where the traditional computer terminal is no longer the primary installation of an ERP System. We see our users out on the road, in the warehouse, collaborating with other users, sharing information with customers and suppliers, and distributing access to information in general. At each of those points, users will need to be able to interact with Exact Alliance and the data it contains. We are working to be an active part of that future, and our Remote Data Collection system will be one step along that road.
One common term associated with Remote Data Collection is "Barcoding". This often refers to more than just printing out barcoded labels or reports, but also an implied sense of automation, where simply scanning a barcode might receive material, or ship finished goods.
Exact Alliance currently supports the ability to print both reports and custom labels containing barcodes, and as we release variations of each transaction method, many of them may require the use of barcodes to initiate a transaction or record serial numbers, but we don't believe that using barcodes is automatically the best method of collecting all data.
Our goal in each transaction method we release is to make the method simple to use and accurate. For instance, our transaction method for physical inventory and cycle counts makes no use of barcodes, and yet provides an easy, reliable, and auditable system for end-of-the-year physical inventories and ongoing cycle-counts.
Remote Data Collection, then, is far more than just barcodes. It is a design philosophy that extends the ERP system beyond the borders of the office and the workstation to support the enterprise itself.
